Company History

Spirax Sarco and many of their world-wide associate companies have been in business for more than ninety years providing continuous service to steam users by offering solutions to the many product and process application challenges, that steam and other industrial fluids incur from time to time. The company has developed unique solutions that enable processes to operate more effectively and efficiently, thereby increasing production, reducing maintenance and reduced energy costs and much, much more. This is available as a result of the pooled knowledge and experience throughout the Spirax Sarco organization world-wide.

Clement Herbert James Wells, founder of the Sarco Company, was born in London, England on August 15, 1874. He formed an agency in New York for the Sanders Reiders Company in 1908, to sell thermostatic steam traps and controls. At the onset of WW1 it was difficult to import these products and so he set up manufacturing, firstly with sub-contractors and eventually with their own manufacturing plant in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Sarco Canada came into being in 1926, with Clement's brother Eric, forming the Sarco Company in Toronto. At about the same time, Clement Wells had representation in the UK with a firm called Walker Crosweller. Eventually a separate company was formed with the name Spirax, which eventually became known as Spirax Sarco. In 1931 Mr. Lionel Northcroft was taken on by Walker Crosweller as the Sales Manager, he eventually became the major shareholder and Managing Director Spirax Sarco Limited.

The factory was moved from Clairmont to Milner Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario in 1959. We moved to our present address in Concord, on October 12, 1990. The following is a photograph of some of our office and sales staff at the stone laying ceremony by Mr. Christopher Tappin, our Group Chairman, on April 23, 1990.

The first Canadian manufacturing plant was set up in October of 1941 and located in the village of Clairmont , Ontario (shown above and below). They manufactured balanced pressure steam traps and various other traps and self acting temperature controls in the early days.
